What If Schools Actually Taught Us Something Useful?

What If Schools Actually Taught Us Something Useful?

Be honest with me—how many times have you needed to calculate the Pythagorean theorem in real life? Or had to write an essay about a poet who died centuries ago while trying to survive adulthood? Yeah, exactly.

But you know what would’ve actually helped? Learning how to do taxes, manage money, cook a meal without burning the kitchen down, fix a car, or—God forbid—defend ourselves in a dangerous situation. Imagine if instead of cramming pointless formulas, we were taught how the world actually works.

If schools had prioritized real-life education, I swear, 85% of us would be richer, smarter, and ahead in life. But no, instead, we got a curriculum that prepped us to be employees, not independent, self-sufficient people.

The Education System: A Masterclass in Uselessness

Here’s the cold, hard truth—most of us left school with a diploma but no clue how to survive life. We can name every European country’s capital, but do we know:
✔️ How to do our taxes? Nope.
✔️ How to budget properly? Doubt it.
✔️ How insurance works? Huh?
✔️ How to fix a leaking tap? Call the plumber.
✔️ How to negotiate a salary? What’s that?

Meanwhile, schools happily let us graduate without these essential skills, and now we’re all out here learning the hard way, losing money, making dumb financial decisions, and Googling "how to fix my life" at 2 a.m.

If Personal Finance, Cooking, Car Maintenance, Insurance, and Self-Defense were actual school subjects, we would all be living differently right now.

Then, There’s China...

And then you look at China. Listen, say what you want, but those people have figured something out.

Despite their currency not even being the strongest, their economy is booming, their cities are futuristic, and their people are highly skilled. You think that’s an accident? No. It’s because their education system is built for success.

I recently watched a Nigerian guy on YouTube showing how China operates—and I won’t lie, I was shocked. The kids there? Built differently. While we were busy memorizing poetry, they were learning skills that actually shape the future.

They don’t even have the insane natural resources that Africa has, yet look at them—progressing, innovating, winning. Meanwhile, Africa? Sitting on gold, diamonds, oil, and fertile land, yet struggling. Make it make sense!

Congo: The Sleeping Giant

Now, let me talk about my country for a second. Congo. A country so rich in resources but poor in opportunity. A country that should be leading, yet we are watching others build empires while we stay behind.

I was born in South Africa, but my roots are Congolese, and let me tell you, it frustrates me. We have everything—smart people, land, resources, talent—but what we don’t have is the right education system and mindset.

China invested in their people. We don’t. That’s why we’re behind. That’s why my country is not where it should be. And that’s why Africa as a whole keeps waiting for miracles instead of investing in knowledge that leads to real change.

What Needs to Change?

1. Schools Need to Teach Life Skills – If taxes, financial literacy, survival skills, and business strategies were part of the curriculum, we'd all be in a better place.

2. Mindset Shift – We have to stop waiting for the government to fix things and start investing in ourselves and our education.

3. Invest in People, Not Just Resources – A country isn’t wealthy because of its land. It’s wealthy because of its people. Educated, skilled citizens build strong nations.

Final Thoughts: Time to Wake Up

I’m not saying we should cancel traditional subjects. But tell me—why are we not teaching things that actually matter? Why are we still stuck in an outdated education system that sets us up for struggle?

China figured it out. We haven’t.
China values its people. We don’t.
China teaches its youth to thrive. We teach ours to survive.

If we don’t change how we educate ourselves and future generations, we will always be playing catch-up.

But hey, that’s just my opinion. What do you think? Should schools change their curriculum, or are we just doomed to figure life out the hard way? Let’s talk.
